DIY Challenge: Ceremony Decor

7/15/09

So, I found this online (I believe it was created by Karen Tran) and I'm obsessed. I've issued a challenge to both me and the FI to re-create this masterpiece! Here's what I've purchased so far to re-create the look on a budget:

We're going to construct the frame backdrop out of PVC most likely. The columns will be made out of plywood, but we are thinking of making them a little thinner and less "heavy" looking.
  1. Silk leis from Save-On-Crafts: I purchased 48 leis, we need 2.5 strung together to make 20 garlands 6.5 feet long.
  2. Beaded rope from Cristalier: To keep this in a reasonable budget, I couldn't swing the $6 per yard price tag of the chandelier crystals and opted for the beaded rope at a budget-friendly $3.95 per yard. I ordered 24 yards. The strands will hang at varying lengths of 6 ft, 5 ft, 4 ft and 3 ft.
  3. Large drop crystals from Cristalier: I ordered 20 of these large American cut crystals to hang at the end of each beaded rope.
I have yards of white, silky, crinkly fabric in the attic that I got for free years ago, which will cap off the sides and cover the center pole. Since we're still undecided on the columns, and therefore the vases/orchids, I'm holding off on purchasing those for right now. When the decision is made, I'm sure I can find some large glass vases at Christmas Tree Shop, and Ikea has nice latex orchids for $5 a piece. I'm confident that we can completely re-create this look on a budget! Check back in a few weeks as we attempt to set this up in a trial-run in our backyard to work out any technical issues!

UPDATE

Here is how the arch turned out at our ceremony (thanks to photos from Boston Uplights). For those of you who aren't current on the blog - we had a wind-related disaster right before the ceremony started when one of the large urns filled with orchids & hydrangeas fell over. Our coordinator removed the other one, so that's why the pillars look bare. It STILL bothers me! Ha!

We ended up giving our set up to another couple, who in turn, passed it along as well - so it's out there somewhere making the rounds!
