Modern Nautical Wedding Invitation Suite

6/10/10

For my very first post I'm excited to introduce this fantastic invitation suite: Modern Nautical. One of my oldest and dearest friends (and bridesmaids!) Ali is getting married this July. I was honored that she let me design her invitation suite. The wedding will take place at the Commandant's House in Charlestown. The location is a spectacular old mansion right on the wharf. For her wedding colors, Ali chose curry and night (aka yellow and navy - LOVE the combination!) and wished to do something nautically inspired, given the reception location. She wanted something fun, fresh and modern.

I've known Ali for what? Nine years now? The girl has style - she chronicles her love of food, fitness and fashion in her incredible blog. I admit I was a bit nervous to design something for her - I wanted everything perfect, as this wedding has been years in the making. Seriously, it will be the event of the summer. She needed an awesome invitation to set the mood. (And let's be honest, the girl runs 12 miles a day - she could totally kick my butt if I got it wrong!)

Thankfully, Ali is also one of the most easygoing people you'll ever meet. She loved the invite design from the start. I opted to keep things nice and clean, with a "nod to nautical" (rather than full on Pirates of the Caribbean) utilizing a large knot design (it is a wedding after all, can't resist "tying knots") and a complementary anchor. The pieces were printed offset, on a beautiful, crisp white vellum stock. The whole suite was packaged in an envelope enclosure and finished off with not one -but two - belly bands! The first band is a gorgeous Japanese paper with swirling blue dots, and the finishing touch is a hand-tied knot rope.

We've also translated the knot and dot design into a cake design! We have several more projects for this wedding coming up this month, including a unique seating chart idea, custom menus and programs - so check back to see how all the pieces come together.

And a big congratulations to Ali and Adam!
